How we started?
It all started with the images of the desperate migrant workers returning home being splashed across various media at the onset of the dreaded pandemic….. It was then that we made up our mind that a genuine attempt must be made to ensure that they don’t go back to the cities in search of livelihood.
This obviously meant that their skills had to be mapped and they had to be skilled / re-skilled / up-skilled in such a manner that they got absorbed in the industries present in their locality or they set up enterprises of their own – the whole objective was to make them capable enough to get employed closer to their homes so that they never lived as migrants ever again.
What we do?
Poverty is the biggest challenge for the people living in Jawhar and Dahanu talukas in the Palghar district of Maharashtra. With a monthly household income (MHI) of just Rs. 5,000/- there is hardly anything left at the end of the month to improve the quality of life.
Agriculture is the primary source of income for the people living in rural Maharashtra – almost everyone is associated with agriculture, either they own a piece of land and they grow their own crops there, or they work as laborers on someone else’s land.
However, unlike the farmers in other parts of the country where they grow crops over 2-3 cycles in a year, the farmers in Palghar are not so fortunate…. Due to scarcity of water, they can grow only one crop cycle and….. that is the reason for the low MHI and why people tend to migrate to the nearby cities in search of better job opportunities.
NeevJivan Foundation is working to create an alternate source of income (other than agriculture) with the introduction of a vocation of choice in every family in the tribal community and thereby prevent them from migrating to the cities.
We take immense pride in the holistic approach to our work – We engage with our students not just for skill development, but also help them develop a mindset for long term and successful journey through our effective counseling sessions and mentorship modules.
